Perform analyses of secondary side events at the Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant.
To be compliant with regulatory requirements from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Hydro-Québec was required to perform detailed safety analyses for secondary side events at the Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant for:
Performing new analyses that were not part of the Gentilly-2 Safety Report prior to refurbishment
Assessing the impact of fresh fuel on secondary side events
The analysed events were the loss of feedwater flow to one boiler, total loss of feedwater flow, multiple steam generator tube rupture and main steam line break. For the multiple steam generator tube ruptures, the secondary side is contaminated by the primary side and so dose calculations are required.
For each design basis accident, the work consisted of identifying credible and limiting accident scenarios at different power levels, defining the methodology, performing analyses and verify that results met the acceptance criteria. An associated benefit was the production of analysis reports to update the Safety Report for these scenarios.
The work was contracted by Hydro-Québec to AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd). Gilles Sabourin assumed technical supervision. Pascal Hernu performed the dose calculations analyses
