Irradiated Spent Fuel Bay Events Analyses



Perform analyses for irradiated fuel bay (IFB) events at the Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant.


To be compliant with regulatory requirements from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Hydro-Québec was required to perform detailed safety analyses for irradiated fuel bay events at the Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant.

In CANDU reactors, the irradiated fuel bay is outside the reactor building. It is cooled by a dedicated system which uses the recirculated cooling water. The postulated accidents are loss of flow, loss of cooling and failure of a fuel bundle.

The work consisted of identifying credible and limiting accident scenario, define the methodology, develop the required models, perform analyses including public dose calculations and verify that results meet the acceptance criteria. Time available to the operator before design or safety limits (IFB water temperature high alarm, start of boiling, fuel uncovering) were met were also calculated. Specific scenarios that could occur during IFB reparation work were also considered.

The work was contracted by Hydro-Québec to AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd).  Gilles Sabourin assumed technical supervision. Pascal Hernu performed the dose calculations.
