PSA-Based Seismic Margin Assessment for Gentilly-2 NPP

SCOPE

Develop Gentilly-2 site-specific level 2 PSA methodology and models.

DESCRIPTION

To be compliant with regulatory requirements from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Hydro-Québec had to perform an analysis of the seismic capacity of the NPP to support the plant refurbishment.  The PSA-Based SMA was chosen as the approach.


The scope included

  • Development of SMA Methodology
  • Preparation of the Safe Shutdown Equipment List (SSEL) and of the walkdown

  • Review of the fragility analyses

  • Relay Chatter Analysis

  • Accident sequence quantification (ASQ) and analysis

  • The models used up-to-date Gentilly-2 operation practises and PSA models.​


The work was contracted by Hydro-Québec to AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd). 

NOTE:  This work was performed / supervized by MNS personnel during their previous employment
OUTCOME
  • Methodolgoy was presented to CNSC and accepted

  • Level 1 PSA-Based SMA was completed

  • The SMA showed that Gentilly met the overall plant HCLPF safety goal provided recommendations were implemented
